Montrose
Established in 1911, Montrose is one of Houston's most culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhoods, and has long been known as an arty "Bohemian" area. Renovated mansions, bungalows with wide front porches and quaint cottages line the tree-lined boulevards, which are some of the most pedestrian-friendly in Houston. On Montrose Boulevard and Westheimer Road, there are a few original homes remaining. Most have been converted to businesses or restaurants since 1936. Many examples of Houston's historic architecture can be found off Montrose and Westheimer, where many century-old bungalows and mansions are found.
Originally planned in 1910, Montrose was named for a historic town in Scotland by J.W. Link of the Houston Land Corporation. Link's former house is now the administrative building for the University of St. Thomas on Montrose Boulevard.
In recent decades, Montrose has developed a distinct and sophisticated urban personality. Several music venues are found there, as well as popular restaurants and bars and vintage shopping. Some of Houston's most exclusive shopping is found along West Gray. Montrose also boasts a number of fine museums, as well as several highly regarded private and public schools.
Montrose Neighborhoods
Montrose is comprised of a distinct group of neighborhoods. Courtlandt Place is a gated street with fine early 20th century homes and is the area's premier residential neighborhood. Cherryhurst, another premier neighborhood, includes a park and an elementary school. Hyde Park is the most diverse neighborhood and is home to a mix of traditional and trendy businesses and restaurants. Winlow Place is a more traditional neighborhood of mostly two-story brick homes.
Montrose property values soared through the 1980s and 1990s and remain strong today.
