Houston's Briargrove neighborhood was established by developers in the 1950's. It was at the time beyond Houston's city limit. There are approximately 900 homes in the subdivision, which is bordered on the south by Westheimer with a northern border of Woodway.
Originally the homes were mostly one-story ranch style brick homes, but most of these original homes have been remodeled and many have been replaced by new construction since deed restrictions were modified in 1986 to allow one-and-a half and two-story homes. An estimated 3,450 residents live in the neighborhood, an elected, nine-member board of directors is charged with managing the operational and administrative concerns of the property association. This includes setting annual mandatory maintenance dues and fees for services, maintaining deed restrictions and establishing architectural guidelines for new construction and remodeling activities.
At the center of the subdivision is Briargrove's award-winning elementary school. Since 1958, Briargrove Elementary has enjoyed tremendous parent, resident and area business participation in all of its events both scholastic and social. The school was closed for a year and completely upgraded to an incredible facility which re-opened for the 2006-07 school year. This "new" school is equipped with a security system, wireless computer access, large screen digital monitors, a new phone system, and a new computer lab. Many of the old school's feature and history have been preserved including the park area and trees, and the well known mural that was in the entrance hall.
Briargrove's community center with a pool and recreation facility is extremely popular in the summer it has been a hub for swim team competitions, birthday parties and family interaction for several generations.
